Cabinet Reshuffle Urgently Needed

President Kim Dae-jung accepted the resignation of prime minister Park Tae-joon following allegations of illegal tax evasion. With the South-North summit and the rumor of another economic crisis, we don't have time for such an incident.

It was announced that President Kim Dae-jung will move quickly to appoint the next prime minister. He will also spped up the the cumbersome procedure of cabinet approval.

With the upcoming summit only three weeks away, the rapid approval of a prime minister who will be in charge of the country until President Km returns is not a light decision. President Kim should go beyond simply appointing a new prime minister, and introduce a new cabinet as well.

Already there are several rumors as to who President Kim will choose as the next prime minister. It is widely believed that the next prime minister will be a strong supporter of of President Kim's policies.

During the general election period, the ULD declared the impossiblity of any type of restoration in the alliance between itself and the MDP. Therefore, even if Lee Han-dong,the president of the ULD, were to be selected as prime minister, there is still no guarantee of a renewed alliance between the ULD and MDP.

Now,the priority for the government should be the economy and the public's involvement the future of Korean politics.

ChongWaDae and the government are suffering from internal dissent that is a direct result of its conflicting policies. Without the direct intervention of the President, these problems will not go away. President Kim must speed up the reforms planned for the second-half of his term in order to deal with the political problem as soon as possible.
