72-Year-old Woman Wins Divorce Suit

A 72-year-old woman won a divorce suit at the Supreme Court on September 6. She is the oldest woman ever to file and win a divorce suit in Korea.

"The person responsible for this marriage's failure is the husband of 'A', 'B' (92), who has maintained an authoritative, feudalistic attitude throughout their entire married life," declared the Court.

'A', who had been experiencing problems with 'B' regarding financial and religious matters, left the marital home to live separately from 'B' in 1996. However, she reunited with 'B' when he suggested that he would pay the 20-million-won ($18,000) debt 'A' had incurred during the separation if she came back home. However, when 'A' came back, her husband chased her away again, yelling, "Go write your repentence letter!"

When 'B' donated all of their real estate to a university, leaving only 1 billion won for future living expenses, 'A' filed a suit for divorce and won the case.

The court awarded 'A' a total of 1.85 billion won ($1.7 million) in real estate and damages.
