Child Care Center Guilty of Tot's Death

The Civil Department of the Chonju District Court decided in favor of a plaintiff, identified only as Kang, in a compensation for damage case. The court ordered the defendant, a child care center where Kang had kept his child, to pay Kang 110 million won ($100,000).
Last year, Kang's 2 year-old son was fatally struck by a train while trying to walk home from the center by himself. His father promptly sued the center, asking 130 million won in compensation.
The court explained its ruling: "Considering the proximity of the train tracks to the child care center, the toddlers were exposed to a grave danger. The personnel of the center, evidently, couldn't have cared less."
