Growing Popularity of Foot Accessories

Anklets, which have been popular with those in their teens or twenties, are fast becoming a fashion trend with women of all ages. With the growing popularity of anklets and toe rings, pedicure specialty shops are thriving.

Song Tong-won, a manager of the accessory company Obzee, says, "Bracelets for the ankles started selling well in July, however, they have become a key fashion item in any season." He also added, "We are busy with meeting the demand from retailers and customers."

The trend seems to be riding on the popularity of short cigarette pants and mules.

Director of an accessory design school, Oh Chung-soon, says that "bare feet, as a result of the fashion of shorter pant lengths, have become the target for decoration."

Anklets and toe rings originated from Southeast Asian countries, particularly India and Thailand, where ethnic fashions include beads and colorful thread.

One of the characteristics of the trend in Korea is a mixture of gaudiness and colorful detail, as opposed to crystal and silver that were popular in the previous years.

Han Chung-soo, owner of a jewelry retailer, thinks that "compared with last year, exotic designs using turquoise and amber beads are becoming popular."
