For the university entrance exam in the year 2001, the testing of second languages will be added again. The number of applicants applying for the Japanese second language exam is expected to be the highest. A large number of students, currently learning French or German in high school, are switching to Japanese to prepare for their entrance exams.
In a recent study, more than half (45.9 percent) of the total 1207 students surveyed, chose Japanese as their second language. German was 22 percent and French 19.1 percent.
Half of the students (272) who chose Japanese had changed from another second language to Japanese, primarily for the entrance exams.
The Japanese and Korean languages have similar grammatical rules, and unlike other languages, Korean students feel that it is easier to learn and get higher grades in Japanese.
