Kwon Hee-roh Back in Jail for Attempted Murder

After receiving a pardon for a life sentence in Japan only 1 year ago, Kwon Hee-roh is back in jail for attempted murder in Korea.

Kwon was jailed for murdering a member of the Japanese mafia who had harassed him, demanding money. While Kwon was jailed, Buddhist priest Park Sam-jung actively campaigned for his release. After 31 years in prison, the Japanese government released him.

On September 3, Kwon attacked 'Ahn,' the husband of Kwon's close friend, Park, and broke his jaw. "Park called and told me that her husband was holding her hostage," explained Kwon, "and that she feared for her life. So, I went over there with a bamboo spear to kill him." Kwon also tried to set the house on fire, but was unsuccessful.

Kwon met Park at the Buddhist temple where he visits his mother's grave. The two also spent time together in Park's flower shop. In April, Kwon's former wife cleaned out their bank account and left him. Kwon and Park grew close after that, according to neighbors.

Buddhist priest Park Sam-jung said, "I'm saddened that Kwon, who won a pardon, is involved in this messy affair."
