Many Families Have One-Room Housing

About 12.3 percent of the nation's households, or 1.59 million families, live in one room. Of that total, 200,000 households comprise four family members.

And, it was reported Wednesday, 29.5 percent households, or 3.82 million families, live in homes without a kitchen or washing facilities and have to use a community toilet. These facts were revealed in the National Assembly's Construction and Transportation Commmittee during a hearing into the Korea Housing Corporation.

Rep. Lee Jai-chang and Rep. Ahn Sang-soo of the committee charged that despite the state agency's success at raising the housing availability rate to 93 percent, it has overlooked the needs of lower-income households.
