May 18 Memorial Events To Be Held This Week

With the upcoming 20th anniversary of the May 18 Kwangju Massacre, various events will be held this week.
With the themes of 'Light of Millenium-Peace, Human Rights, Unification,' the memorial events committee has prepared the most extravagent and extensive events in the memorial's 20 year history.
Contained within the events is a further theme of 'Truth and Reconciliation,' a focus for the settlement of 20 years of feelings and a search for the spirit and gereral values of May 18.
Under the subject of human rights, many international discussions will also be held. It is expected that a group of academics will visit Kwangju during the event period.
In the Mangwoldong commemorative ceremony on May 18, all high ranking government officials, including President Kim Dae-jung and Prime Minister Park Tae-joon, will participate.
In Seoul the government will celebrate the eve of May 18 from 6 PM on May 17 under the theme of 'Living Myth May18.'
