Novelist Hwang to Meet NK Citizens for TV Drama

The Ministry of Unification (MOU) announced on June 10 that it has approved novelist Hwang Suk Yong's request to contact NK citizens.
As a consequence, Hwang will meet with NK broadcasters to negotiate the possibility of North and South co-producing a TV drama based on his novel 'Jang Kil San'.
The approval of Hwang's application to contact NK people is exceptional. The novelist was released from prison in March of last year, after spending five years in jail, convicted of smuggling into NK and praising the NK regime in March of 1989.
Some opposition, with respect to his past record, was encountered in the discussions with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the National Intelligence Service.
However, the MOU explained, 'We approved his contact as the business in hand is not problematic.' The fact that the novel 'Jang Kil San' is set in NK also seemed to affect the Ministry's decision.
