Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil attended the opening ceremony of the '99 Asia Press Forum', jointly hosted by Joongang Ilbo and the Yumin Foundation, at the Shilla hotel in downtown Seoul on September 15.
In his congratulatory address, the PM said that Asian countries should form a new cooperative regional network based on mutual confidence and assistance between the countries in order to open markets, maximize prosperity, and overcome present and future crises facing them.
The prime minister pointed out that Asia needs to establish its own regional community as the world economy has been divided into several economic blocs.
He emphasized that nations in the Asia-Pacific region should cooperate to increase their influence on the world stage in the 21st century by utilizing their similar characteristics as well as their broad diversity, adding that the 1997 Asian economic crisis awoke the countries in the region to the necessities of cooperation and solidarity beween them.
