Curators and directors of museums and galleries throughout the country held the first general meeting of the association on July 12 and electecd the curator of the Museum of Korea's Indigenous Straw and Plant Handicrafts, In Byung-sun, the association's first president.
About fifty private museums and art galleries that are successful at presenting the traditional arts but are encountering financial difficulties, such as the Onggi Folk Museum, are participating members, while museums operated by corporations were excluded.
The association aims to solve their collective financial problems and dispel society and the government's lack of understanding of private museums.
Newly-appointed President In said, 'The government and citizens also have a responsibility to preserve and cherish our collections as these are public property, co-owned by society while we act as caretakers.'
