"Swiri" Director Kang to Establish New Film-Making System
Published: 04 Jan. 2003, 18:04
The director of the Korean blockbuster 'Swiri', Kang Je-kyu, has proposed a new system of film production to invigorate the domestic film industry.
The director, who earned about five billion won with 'Swiri', will select six or seven directors and screenplay writers, who will be paid 30 to 50 million won basic salary and a further five to ten percent of sales as an incentive.
This decision is remarkable for focusing on the value of the screenplay and shifting importance in film-making from production to writing.
Kang said, 'I realized the central role of the screenplay in 'Swiri'. I will improve the quality of Korean movies by creating a harmony between new and established writers.'
