[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Emergency vehicles need right of way

The recent heavy rains have done lots of damage to property and, tragically, have claimed quite a few lives. I have seen an increasing number of emergency vehicles on the road -- patrol cars, ambulances and fire trucks ?rushing to accident sites. For them, a second counts.

It was disturbing to see some vehicles that didn't bother to give way to those emergency vehicles, no matter how loud the wailing siren was. They had to get to the accident site as soon as possible, and it seemed it didn't occur to other people that their tardiness might cost someone's life.

Traffic laws give emergency vehicles priority over other vehicles. They were not only infringing the law, but also making rescue operations that are already difficult that much more difficult.

I am not just talking about observing the laws. Imagine that the person desperately waiting for help is your friend or relative. Helping the rescuers to get to the site and do their jobs is a matter of morality.
