[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Windup cellular phones?

When I was young, grandfather clocks, wristwatches and toys used windup springs. Winding up the gadgets every so often was a bit cumbersome and annoying, but now everything runs on batteries ?obile phones, watches and even electric razors.

A few years back a lot of people were fussing about the environmental and health damage caused by batteries made of lead and mercury, but in recent years such batteries are no longer in production.

Yet batteries are becoming more of a trash nuisance.

Although there is a box in apartment buildings for collecting used batteries, not many are being collected or properly recycled.

I want to ask others to use windup springs instead of batteries. Many think that would be inconvenient, but it might reduces environmental pollution and proliferating trash.

Environment protection starts with such little practices.
