Kim off to the countryside to plan strategy for 2002

President Kim Dae-jung will leave Friday for his country house in North Chungcheong province for four days to set his policies for the coming year. He will announce his plans at a press forum in January.

Political analysts said that with just one year left in office, Mr. Kim will seek to win back public trust, which suffered because of the series of corruption scandals his administration was implicated in.

Mr. Kim opened the last cabinet meeting of the year Wednesday and emphasized the need for further corporate restructuring, pointing to Argentina as an example of what can happen if government is not vigilant in its efforts to maintain a true market economy. He also lamented the state of inter-Korean affairs, which has been a centerpiece of his policy objectives in the past.

He attributed the domestic economic recession to the worldwide downturn, and noted some of the changes in the international order as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in New York and Washington.
