Parties abound to uncork latest round of wines from BeaujolaisOver the past few years, Koreans have adopted a French tradition: celebrating the arrival of the Beaujolais Nouveau on the third Thursday of November.
Made from grapes harvested in August and September, the ruby-colored wine is young, fresh and fragrant. It will never be mistaken for a great Bordeaux, yet there is great anticipation each fall, since the wine makes its debut everywhere in the world at exactly the same moment.
The arrival of the 2002 Beaujolais Nouveau in Seoul will be heralded with parties to uncork the wine at midnight on Nov. 20. Here are some of the best events in town:
Beaujolais Nouveau Countdown Party in the Crystal Ballroom of the Lotte Hotel downtown
Includes a Lee Eun-mi miniconcert, the percussion group Nanta, a laser show, grape pressing, a best-dressed contest, a dance party and a buffet dinner. Ten kinds of Beaujolais will be introduced. The winner of a lucky draw will win a round-trip air ticket to France. From 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.. Tickets cost 60,000 won ($50). For reservations, call (02) 2632-0502.
2002 Beaujolais Nouveau Special Party at Bizbaz in the COEX Convention Center
The party features 100 kinds of wine, including the new Beaujolais. There will be a side-dish buffet, dancing to live music, a magic show by Oh Eun-young and eight casino games, including baccarat and roulette. The event runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Bizbaz is located on the second floor of COEX Convention Center. The price is 50,000 won. For reservation, call (02) 6002-7777.
2002 World Wine and Jazz Festival with Beaujolais Nouveau in the Regency Room of the Grand Hyatt Seoul
The evening starts with a 6:30 p.m. caviar-and-canape reception and continues with a 7 p.m. seven-course dinner served with wine. Then, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., the Lee Jung-sik Quartet performs jazz. Other events include side-dish buffet, a wine tasting contest, a dance contest and lucky draws. The dinner costs 150,000 won; the party alone is 50,000 won. For reservations, call (02) 2231-4901.
2002 Beaujolais Nouveau Festival at the Vine Restaurant in the Lotte Hotel downtown
The Vine Restaurant will present six kinds of Beaujolais Nouveau. The event starts with sparkling wine at 11 p.m. on Nov. 20th. The ceremonial wine barrel will be opened at midnight for sampling the Beaujolais Nouveau. Canapes and wine will be served until 1 a.m. There will be lucky draws. The event costs 40,000 won. A Beaujolais Nouveau festival dinner, with a special three-course menu and wine, runs Nov. 21-30 and costs 50,000 won. For reservations, call (02) 317-7151.
Beaujolais Nouveau Wine and Dine at the Grand Cafe, the Grand Inter-Continental Hotel
From Nov. 20 to Nov. 30, five types of Beaujolais Nouveau -- Louis Jadot Primeur, Joseph Drouhin, Pierre Ferraud & Fils, Collin-Bourisset and Chanson Pere & Fils -- will be introduced to wine lovers. A special Beaujolais Nouveau menu includes assorted canapes, duck liver and fig terrine, scallop and pancetta salad, beef tenderloin and a dessert of cookie cake, ice cream and berries. A Votre Sante Wine Festival at the View Restaurant in the Sheraton Walkerhill Hotel
A three-course menu, including two glasses of Beaujolais Nouveau, costs 40,000 won. The wines will be served until December 21. From Nov. 21-Dec. 31, the wines will be sold in the Deli. For reservations, (02) 450-4478.
Beaujolais Nouveau Wine and Dinner at Di Moda in the J.W. Marriott Hotel
Di Moda, the entertainment center in J.W. Marriott Hotel, is hosting a Beaujolais Nouveau Wine and Dinner Buffet on Nov. 21. The Italian dinner buffet with unlimited Beaujolais Nouveau runs 6-10 p.m. The dinner costs 55,000 won. For reservations, call (02) 6282-6762.
