[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Need to find a safe, secure N-waste site
Published: 01 Mar. 2003, 00:14
A nuclear waste site needs to be found. It cannot be postponed indefinitely. It sure is a hot potato, but regional residents, environmentalists and politicians must come up with a solution.
We must realize the fact that 40 percent of the energy produced in this country is from nuclear generators. It plays a crucial role in our economy, especially since the crisis in the Middle East has pushed oil prices higher. With such high dependency, we must look to the nuclear reactor.
We are in a situation where we cannot do without nuclear power. And we cannot live in fear of the waste. Thus, we need a safe place to store it.
We must quickly find a safe place to dispose of the nuclear waste, a place where people are confident it is safely stored.
Transparency, participation, confirmation and trust must come together to reach such a resolution. Keep in mind, we have no other option.
