&#91LETTERS TO THE EDITOR&#93Stop putting great weight on grades

My son is in the sixth grade. There was an election at his school for the student council, and there was an eligibility requirement -- good grades. Those who did not have certain grades were barred from running.
One of the problems in our education system is the absolute importance placed on grades. This is obviously the case in primary school, where the goal should be universal education. It’s outrageous. There are likely many children out there who may not be the best students in school but who want to represent their friends because they have special leadership qualities. I can only imagine the hurt that children must feel when they are told, "You cannot be a class representative because you do not have good enough grades."
No wonder our education system is in trouble. Our schools are stripping students from representing their peers on the grounds of grades. At this rate, how are we going to teach our children about the principles of democracy?
