[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]No aid given to injured employee
Published: 17 Jul. 2003, 01:12
I worked at a famous fast food restaurant for five months last year along with a friend. My friend had the job of changing the oil used for frying. He was burned several times, but no medical treatment or compensation was given. We did not complain then, but we feel that the company took advantage of us because we were part-timers.
The restaurant provided no clothing or other protective device while my friend was doing his job. Nor did it provide any special education.
After my friend suffered burns, a manager scolded him for failing to do the job properly and said that part-timers were responsible for any accident on the job because they were not contract employees.
Society has shown a growing concern about non-contract workers, but no attention has been paid to students holding part-time jobs. As a result, they were abused by a global fast food chain.
