&#91LETTERS TO THE EDITOR&#93A modifier is misplaced

The recently deceased comedian Bob Hope often turned his punch lines on himself. When gunshots were heard during his wartime USO shows, he often quipped, “I wonder which one of my movies they’re watching.”
In Friday’s JoongAng Daily, Oh Byung-sang misplaced a modifier in his tribute. The writer meant to say, “With laughter [Mr. Hope] relieved the soldiers’ fears of death” but instead wrote, “He relieved the soldiers’ fears of death with laughter.” Mr. Hope, I’m sure, would have used this malapropism on stage if he had thought of it first.
