&#91LETTERS TO THE EDITOR&#93Fire alarm causes worry

I recently realized the fire alarm in my apartment was on while I was trying to sleep. I thought there might be a fire and checked everywhere. I found nothing wrong, and tried to sleep again even though I was feeling extremely nervous.
I called the maintenance office the next day. The worker there said that the alarm was on because of humid weather and that it would be okay to turn it off if the alarm light bothered me. He did not even think about checking the alarm.
Japan, in contrast, thoroughly checks every fire alarm. But I remembered that my alarm had not been examined in the seven years that I have lived in the building. It would be horrible if the alarm did not work if an actual fire occurred. Do I need an emergency rope?
