[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Slow aid from rescue workers
Published: 21 Sep. 2003, 23:38
While I was at home recently a sudden, loud noise startled me. When I looked outside I saw a man lying on the ground after being hit by a truck.
I immediately dialed the emergency number, 119. The operator initially told me an emergency squad could not be sent to the scene because the truck driver might take the victim to a hospital. Also, since none of those directly involved with the accident made the call, the rescue team might find itself in an awkward situation.
After I pointed out that a man’s life was at stake, the operator grudglingly agreed to send a rescue team. But it arrived 20 minutes after I made the call.
I know our rescue workers do a lot of good deeds and even risk their lives. But I hope they realize that a lot of people depend on them and that they will show more integrity in their work.
