[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Alternatives to service

Recently, there are have been many disputes about conscientious objectors who refuse to perform mandatory military service in Korea. There must be a middle ground that both sides can compromise on.
The conscientious objectors are proposing alternative duties at orphanages or senior citizens’ centers, but I believe that if we are able to find alternative military-related duties, people will be able to accept the idea of performing an alternative military service.
My idea for alternative duties is de-mining. Mines symbolize war and violence, and removing mines is an active way to achieve peace, which is what the conscientious objectors want.
