[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Objecting to objecting to circumcision

Two weeks ago, the JoongAng Daily printed an op-ed piece on the evils of circumcision by Kim Dae-Sik. Then the paper gave him a sympathetic full-page spread.
I could barely contain myself when I read that his web site, www.pop119.com, “was created to counter the assumption that circumcision is medically necessary.” He chooses to overlook the fact that in Korea, cosmetic surgery is big business; by any measure, circumcisions make up only a small fraction of unnecessary surgeries. In 2002, there were more than 1,020 cosmetic surgery clinics in Korea. Kim Dae Sik says he will not allow his son to be circumcised. Will he also forbid his son from having double-eyelid surgery or a nose enlargement?
