[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Plant a tree, save the world

Environmental scholars are saying that global warming is becoming a more serious problem to mankind than terrorism in 21st century.
Global warming comes from greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. The gases come from everyday human life.
There is no better way to remove an excess of these gases than to plant trees. First of all, trees eat the gases. Korean forests absorbed 4 billion tons of carbon dioxide last year, one study estimated.
Trees also reduce the creation of greenhouse gases by their shadows, which can cool houses and help replace the air conditioner in the summer.
Timber is a good gas-reducing material for industry compared to iron and petrochemical materials.
Studies from the National Forest Research Institute show that if every person in Korea plants 600 trees through his or her lifetime, Korea will be free from the greenhouse gases problem. This is the reason I recommend people plant trees.
