[Photo]Memories of massacre linger in Gwangju

These photos capture the chaos and violence of the events that began May 18, 1980, when pro-democracy activists clashed with soldiers from the military regime after Chun Doo Hwan ordered the army to suppress demonstrations. The activists responded by arming themselves and fighting back. Then the army opened fire on the people.
After several days, the blood from the dead and wounded activists and sympathetic citizens stained the streets. Survivors remember the soldiers beating citizens to death, threatening activists with guns and sometimes even firing at people at random.
