Bizarre confession made

A prosecution team in charge of the investigation of serial killer suspect Yoo Yeong-cheol said yesterday that Mr. Yoo confessed to eating the flesh of the people he killed.
The Seoul District Public Prosecutors Office opened Mr. Yoo’s testimony to the public as it indicted him yesterday on 11 different types of charges, including murder for the deaths of 21 people.
“Mr. Yoo confessed that he ate victims’ human flesh four times to cope with his epilepsy,” said the office, which added that it hasn’t yet found any evidence backing his claim. Mr. Yoo also said that if he had not been caught, he would have killed up to 100 people.
The prosecution has said Mr. Yoo decided to commit murder in June 2000, while he was in police custody on a rape charge, after he read an article on the murder case of serial killer Chung Du-yeong. Mr. Chung killed nine rich people in Busan and surrounding South Gyeongsang province from June 1999 to April 2000.
The prosecution concluded from its analysis of Mr. Yoo’s testimony that he killed rich and elderly people out of a hostility that originated from his childhood poverty. Mr. Yoo also told police he killed women because he hated them.
So far, the prosecution’s case against Mr. Yoo rests heavily upon his confession. In an effort to secure more physical evidence, the prosecution is also looking for a “murder diary” that Mr. Yoo said he had kept on his computer. The prosecution, however, said it is possible there is no diary, as Mr. Yoo has changed his statements regarding it several times.
