President eats royally on state visit

LONDON ― Britain’s royal family hosted a lavish welcome for the first state visit by a South Korean president, including an exquisite lunch with Queen Elizabeth II.
President Roh Moo-hyun enjoyed a main dish of deer filet with mushrooms at Wednesday’s seven-course meal. Also on the menu: pheasant soup, a salmon dish, turbot fillet and prawns.
President Roh and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the queen’s husband, wore tailcoats.
South Korea’s first lady, Kwon Yang-suk, wore a white traditional Korean dress decorated with flower patterns. The queen was dressed in a golden off-white tone dress.
The South Korean presidential couple and the British royal couple also exchanged gifts at the luncheon.
Mr. Roh presented the queen a horn from Joseon Dynasty’s royal family and gave Prince Philip arrows modeled on those from the Shilla and Joseon eras in Korea.
The queen gave two pieces of pottery to Mr. Roh and presented a silver box engraved with her royal seal to Ms. Kwon.
Glasses used for the luncheon were the same ones used for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. A service set from the18th century and a Victory and Albert desert service set from 1876 were chosen to serve the president at the royal luncheon. During the lunch, the guests enjoyed eleven classical music pieces.
