[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]South’s military buildupAccording to a May 28 editorial, the South Korean Defense Ministry is promoting an arms buildup with only 6 percent of the money in hand.
I agree that the South Korean government must first explain to its taxpayers that there are sacrifices ahead they must be prepared to make; and, because of the importance of the issue ― nothing short of independence from the United States for its national defense ― possibly hold a plebiscite.
It’s not that the alliance is fraying so much as American power is not as great as it was beginning in the mid-20th century.
