[LETTERS TO THE EDITOR]Reform English education

According to your editorial, “English education suffering” (July 5), English teachers do not seem to be in good shape to teach young people.
Of course, there must be teachers who are competent and eligible, but the low average scores on TOEIC and parents’ distrust of teachers reflects a great problem here. It is crucial to have competent English teachers. Whether one wants to admit it or not, the ability to use English is not a need but a must in this society.
In my opinion, Korea should develop a new system to test teachers’ pronunciation abilities and knowledge of English grammar. Also, the current system of English education should be altered to make it more effective. Having better English teachers will help Korea become one of the most influential countries in the world.
