[LETTERS to the editor]What alternative to nuclear?

I was waiting for my friends in front of COEX the other day when I saw a large group of people protesting in front of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). They were holding banners that said “Anti-Nuke.”
We all know nuclear radiation can be fatal but I am curious. If the protesters think nuclear energy is such a problem, do they have an alternative? I am not saying nuclear energy is perfect nor that it will be the best choice forever, but at the moment there is no better alternative.
Until we discover new energy or develop a better way to produce solar and wind energy, nuclear will stay as the best energy source. So, should nuclear power plants shut down as the protesters wish?
In Korea, 40% of the energy we use is nuclear and if the plants shut down we would not have electricity. Maybe the protesters would change their minds if they realized how dark our nights would be without electricity.
