Envoy loves drama of Czech mates

He’s hardly a lonely tube-watching housewife.
“Watching ‘Lovers in Prague’ is the biggest pleasure in my life these days,” said Tomas Smetanka, the Czech ambassador to Seoul.
“Lovers in Prague” is a romantic television drama broadcast by SBS. The story takes place in the Czech capital.
Mr. Smetanka said he was surprised to find that many people he meets these days know about the Czech Republic and Prague.
The TV drama has been a hit, with ratings over 30 percent. The Czech Embassy has also had a part in the project ― introducing the producers to city officials, providing advice and gaving them an information about the Czech Republic.
Mr. Smetanka has stayed in Korea for only 15 months, but said he can follow the plot with little difficulty.
“I carefully watch facial expressions and behavior of the actors and actresses,” he said. “I confirm my guesses by asking the Korean employees, and surprisingly, I’m right most of the time.”
Korean-Czech relations were already improving before the show started airing this year : a direct flight between Seoul and Prague was launched last year and a Czech tourism office opened in Seoul.
In the first half of this year, 20,000 Korean tourists visited Prague, and Mr. Smetanka said he expects that number to steadily increase.
