Peace march held on Geoje island

The fourth World Peace Parade, organized by the International Friendship Club, was held last Saturday and Sunday on Geoje Island. The global event was organized for the “pursuit of world peace and human dignity.” Around 10,000 people participated in the two-day event, including ambassadors and diplomats from 40 countries, nongovernmental organizations, International Friendship Club members from foreign countries and government-sponsored foreign students residing in Korea.
The first such event held by the club was in October 2003 in Yanggu, Gangwon province.
The festivals are intended to promote visions of a world without war or hunger and where the environment and basic human rights are protected.
On Saturday afternoon, participants toured the former Geoje prisoner of war camp.
On Sunday, the main event ― the World Peace Parade ― took place. Participants walked about 10 kilometers (6 miles) along the island’s seaside road. Afterwards, a farewell ceremony was held, including a performance by the Korean Jodel Children’s Choir.
