City government opens 2nd English village camp

Seoul English Village Suyu Camp, the second English village in Seoul, was opened yesterday, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced. It started receiving applications for student places from Feb. 28.
The village, built on about 16 acres (65,000 hectares) in Suyu-dong, consists of buildings mocked up to represent a city hall, post office, immigration office, theater, hospital, post office, bank, police office and more. Children will be able to practice English conversation in various settings, the city government said.
The first English village in Seoul was opened in 2004 in Pungnap-dong, southeastern Seoul, and has tutored 18,267 students thus far.
The new village will be completed by June with facilities including a swimming pool, mini golf course and a dormitory. When the construction is finished, the village will be able to accept up to 375 students in 126 dormitory rooms.
Lee Jung-ho, a city government official, said, “We expect that students will be able to learn English effectively in the Suyu Camp at less cost than going abroad to study English.”
The village will be operated by YBM Education, under commission by the city government. Until June, when the the dormitory is completed, the village will be open to fifth and sixth grade elementary students living in northern Seoul. For more information, visit, www. sev.go.kr.
