[LETTERS to the editor]Give students a voice in education

The editorial “Professors get free ride“ (June 12) illustrates the problem of university education in Korea. As society changes, education should be reformed. Particularly in the engineering sector, in which the invention of new technologies is the most important factor, continuous change in education is crucial.
The solution could be a new system that would revolutionize Korean education to achieve better quality and nurture competent students. Objective evaluations of professors by students is an effective way to improve the quality of teaching. The seniority system among professors should also be dismantled to encourage young professors’ abilities and competitiveness. At the same time, older professors should be given chances for further development while respecting their dignity, as they nurture future generations of leading Koreans.
