Puccini’s Butterfly lands in Bucheon

The world-renowned opera “Madame Butterfly,” with its tragic love story, opens today in Bucheon. It provides a refreshing change for those who have seen too many big-budget Hollywood movies where everybody gets blown to pieces. Here hearts are the only things that get broken.
The production will not be staged in Seoul, where most operas and theatrical performance are held. Instead Puccini’s opera will be shown over the next few months in theaters across Gyeonggi province, produced by the Gyeonggi Association of Culture and Art Centers, a joint collaboration of art centers from Seoul’s neighboring cities of Bucheon and Goyang.

According to the Association, the goal of the performance is to establish a new “cultural belt” in Gyeonggi province through cooperation among local cultural centers. They also hope to attract customers from Seoul as the shows are performed in cities close to the capital.
“Madame Butterfly” has two casts, one led by performers Kim Yoo-seom, soprano; Lee Hyeon, tenor; Lee Ah-kyeong, mezzo soprano; and Choi Jong-woo, baritone, whose reputation has already been recognized internationally.
The second team consists of novice performers who were selected after six thorough auditions. This group includes soprano Noh Jeong-ae, who is currently studying music in Germany and has already received critical acclaim for her performances in other Puccini operas.
Both casts received training from a choreographer of the Hanayagi family, which is famous for its long line of traditional Japanese dance performers.
The Gyeonggi province “Madame Butterfly” is directed by Kim Hak-min, who has previously directed Korean versions of famous musicals such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Miss Saigon” and Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.”
Kim Doc-ki, will be directing the orchestra for this opera. Mr. Kim has directed 30 or so operas including the first “Madame Butterfly” ever performed in Korea.
