A graceful acrobat of arias sings love duets on tour

To celebrate the release of her album titled “Love Duets,” which features famous opera arias about love, soprano Shin Young-ok and Mexican tenor Fernando de la Mora will sing a selection of operatic arias and popular songs from musicals during a nationwide tour.

They will perform the duets with the Mostly Philharmonic Orchestra. Ttoday they will be in Jeonju. They will then visit Goyang on Sunday, Seongnam on Jan. 4, Daegu on Jan. 6, Ulsan on Jan. 12, Geoje Island on Jan. 18, Suwon on Jan. 21 and Gwangju on Jan. 23.
In 1990, one year after her debut on the international stage, Ms. Shin was the winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council audition. And after her performance at the Met Audition Winners in Concert, The New York Times wrote, “her voice, focused, carried well, and she negotiated the altitudinous acrobatics with ease and uncanny accuracy of pitch. She won the afternoon’s loudest ovations.” She has also been awarded first prize in the Loren Zachary Competition and the Olga Koussevitsky Competition.
Shin has appeared regularly at the Metropolitan Opera since 1991 in a variety of roles including Gilda in “Rigoletto,” the title role in “Lucia di Lammermoor” and Zerlina in “Don Giovanni.” She sang at the New York Met’s New Year’s Eve Millennium Gala, at the 2001 gala honoring Giuseppe Verdi and at the 2002 World Trade Center Relief Benefit.
She has also appeared at world famous venues and festivals including the Royal Opera at Covent Garden, Opera National de Paris, Opera de Nice and Opera Comique.
Fernando De La Mora made his New York debut with the Opera Orchestra of New York at Carnegie Hall, playing the title role in “Roberto Deveraux.” He has also appeared as Faust at the Paris Opera Bastille and as Alfredo in “La Traviata” at La Scala, at the Berlin Deutsche Opera and at the Vienna Staatsoper. He has been Nemorino in “L’Elisir d’Amore” at Covent Garden and Rodolfo in “La Boheme” at the Met. In 2005 and 2006, Mr. de la Mora returned to the Met to sing Romeo in “Romeo et Juliette, Christian in “Cyrano de Bergerac” and Faust in “Faust.”
The program mostly consists of operatic arias and duets found on Ms. Shin’s album. The repertoire for the Goyang concert includes arias from “L’elisir d’amore” by Gaetano Donizetti, “Romeo et Juliette” by Charles Gounod, “Les Pecheurs de Perles” by Bizet, “Rigoletto” and “La Traviata” by Guiseppe Verdi and musical selections from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein, “Jekyll and Hyde” by Frank Wildhorn and “Quest for Camelot” by David Foster.
