An artist's nirvana in a suburban townhouse

As people grow older they want larger and nicer houses with high ceilings, sunlight streaming through the windows, and a round table big enough for the whole family to dine together.
나이 들수록 더 크고 멋진 집에 살고 싶어진다. 높은 천정이 있고, 창문 사이로 햇살이 비치며, 모든 가족이 들러 앉아 식사할 수 있는 큰 식탁이 있는 집 말이다.
It would be ideal to reside in such a house and have friends live nearby. After retirement such a place could provide the perfect environment.

This may explain the growing interest in town house communities. However, it is not easy to turn such dreams into reality. Firstly, for economic reasons, and secondly, it is difficult to find people who have similar interests.
이런 이유로 타운 하우스 동호인에 대해 관심이 높아지는 가 보다. 하지만 그 꿈을 실행하기는 쉽지 않다. 먼저 경제적 이유 때문이고, 두 번째는 비슷한 관심을 갖는 사람을 발견하기가 어렵다.
On a peaceful Sunday afternoon, Lee Won-seok, 40, a sculptor, and Chun Young-shin, 38, a potter, held a barbeque party in their front yard. Those invited were all neighborhood artists.
천영신(38. 도예가)씨는 집 마당에서 삼겹살 파티를 열었다. 모인 이들은 모두 근처에 사는 미술인들이었다.
Five couples attended the party, all ten of them painters, sculptors, designers, or musicians. They all have their studios in the area and organize an event called "Gusan Open Studio," in the fall in which they open their studios to the public. Hong Ji-yeun, 35, a painter at Gana Art Center, is the only one who has a studio outside the area.

다섯 쌍의 부부가 파티에 참석했다. 모두 화가, 조각가 또는 음악가였다. 그들은 그 지역에 작업실을 갖고 있으며, 매해 가을 일반인들에게 작가의 작업공간을 공개하는 '구산 오픈 스튜디오'라는 행사를 열고 있다. 가나아트센터 전속 작가인 홍지연씨만 다른 지역에 작업실을 두고 있다.
“We gather regularly. Especially when spring comes, it is almost our ritual for us to visit each other's homes and have a couple of drinks," says Park Seung-beom, 63, a painter.
"자주 모이죠. 특히 봄이 오면 다른 집을 방문해 술을 마시는 것이 일상이 됐죠." 박승범(63.화가)씨의 말이다.
"We planted pine trees, white birches, peonies, and lilies together just a few days ago," says Lee. "I can finally fulfill my promise to my wife. I promised to provide an environment where she will be surrounded by flowers all year around."

이원석 씨는 "안 그래도 며칠 전 마당에 잣나무, 자작나무, 모란이랑 백합까지 더 심었다"며 "'사시사철 꽃으로 둘러싸이게 하겠다'던 아내와의 약속을 드디어 지킬 수 있을 듯하다"고 말했다.
“That was how he talked me into moving here," Chun said. "However, it has always been my dream to have a spacious studio in the suburbs."

아내 천 씨는 "이이가 여기 와 살자고 이야기할 때 한 말"이라며 "서울 외곽에 넓은 작업실을 가지는 것은 항상 나의 꿈이었다"고 했다.
Prior to moving to Gusan-dong, Lee ran an art academy. In 2002, out of the blue, he told his wife that he would be closing the academy. He started to look for land. He had decided he needed space for a studio with peaceful surroundings.

구산동으로 이사 오기 전 이원석 씨는 미술 학원을 운영했다. 2002년 이 씨가 아내에게 불쑥 "나 학원 접겠다"는 말을 했다. 그는 땅을 보러 다니기 시작했다. 전업 작가 생활을 하기 위해 조용한 환경을 가진 작업실이 필요하다고 결정했기 때문이다.
