JoongAng Daily 1면 기사 May 4, 2007

For the first time in nearly 10 weeks, the Grand National Party's two top presidential contenders ― rivals Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye ― came face-to-face hoping to mend the rift between them that grew after the party's poor showing in the April 25 by-elections.

Instead, Lee and Park battled again. They reconfirmed their differences about how the party should choose its presidential candidate in the August primary.

Arranged by the party's chairman, Kang Jae-sup, Lee and Park met at the Grand National headquarters in Yeomchang-dong, southwestern Seoul. Grand National Floor Leader, Kim Hyong-o, also attended the 70-minute closed-door session. The two agreed on eight items on the meeting agenda until they got to the last issue: finalization of the primary rules, party officials said.

Park said the party should respect the current rules for choosing its presidential candidate, rather than drawing up new guidelines. Lee and Park had agreed in March that 200,000 people should be polled, and the primary should take place in August. The two sides, however, differ on how to interpret the rule.

After yesterday's meeting, the Grand National Party issued a statement saying Lee and Park agreed in principle to leave the primary election rules up to the party leadership. Shortly after that announcement, however, Park said she never agreed to such a decision. She reiterated her position that the primary should be held under the already agreed-upon rules.
*issue a statement; 성명을 발표하다
