DMZ train tested, but no 'All aboard!' foreseen

Aboard Train 7435 on the Gyeongui Line ― As a South Korean train pulled out of the Munsan Station bound for the inter-Korean border for the first time in 56 years, an enthusiastic crowd of about 1,000 people waved Korean Peninsula flags and set off firecrackers yesterday morning.

경의선 7435호 기차를 타고 - 어제 아침 56년 만에 처음으로 남북의 국경을 넘으려고 남한 기차 한대가 문산역을 출발하자, 1천 여명의 열광적인 군중들이 한반도기를 흔들고 폭죽을 터뜨렸다.
Such festivity was conspicuously absent on the other side of the border. At the North's Mount Kumgang Station, an outmoded train ― vintage 1968 ― was gearing up to travel through the Demilitarized Zone for the historic test operation. About 100 teenagers dutifully clapped and waved as the train left the station at 11:30 a.m.

국경의 다른 쪽에서는 확연히 그런 축제의 분위기는 보이지 않았다. 북한의 금강산역에서는 1968년식 낡은 기차가 비무장지대를 통과하는 역사적인 시험운행을 준비하고 있었다. 그 기차가 11시30분에 역에서 출발하자 100여명의 청소년들이 의무적으로 박수를 치고 손을 흔들었다.
Thus on a bright spring morning under a clear sky, the two Koreas finally tested their reconnected railway. One train each from the North and the South traveled through the Demilitarized Zone to reach destinations across the border, two years after the railroad tracks were reconnected.

맑고 화창한 봄날에 이처럼 남북한은 마침내 다시 연결한 남북철도를 시험운행 했다. 철도가 연결된 지 2년이 지난 후에 남북 양측에서 각각 한대의 기차가 비무장지대를 지나서 국경을 넘어 목적지로 달렸다.
The two countries agreed in 2000 to restore a railroad that was severed by war in 1950; construction was completed in 2005. After a series of cancellations largely caused by the North Korean military's reluctance to open the border, the two sides made the symbolic run.
2000년에 남북한은 1950년의 전쟁으로 단절됐던 철도를 복원하자는데 합의했다. 철도연결은 2005년에 완공됐다. 국경개방을 꺼리는 북한 군부의 반발로 시험운행이 여러 차례 취소된 이후 남북은 상징적인 시험운행을 실시했다.

남측이 남북횡단철도를 러시아를 가로지르는 시베리아횡단철도와 연결시키려는 원대한 꿈을 갖고 있지만, 남북통일이 이뤄지기 전에는 그 꿈의 실현가능성은 매우 희박해 보인다. 단지 한번의 시험운행을 성사시키려고 북측과 길고 어려운 협상들을 거쳤고 남측은 북측에 막대한 지원을 했다.
The South Korean train left Munsan at 11:28 a.m. and stopped shortly at Dorasan Station at noon before it passed the military demarcation line. The train stopped at the North's Panmun Station for immigration and customs, but the atmosphere was hardly festive. Only seven station employees and 13 customs officials welcomed the train.

남한 기차는 오전 11시28분에 문산을 떠나 정오에 잠시 도라산역에 멈춘 뒤 군사분계선을 통과했다. 기차는 입국심사와 세관심사를 위해서 북한의 판문역에 멈췄는데, 그곳은 전혀 축제분위기가 아니었다. 단지 역무원 7명과 세관원 13명이 기차를 맞이했다.
