Junko Sagawa

A Japanese woman made ripples in the Korean entertainment scene last week when she claimed that she was sexually harassed by a Korean instructor on a nationally popular TV show, “Chitchat of the Beauties” on KBS-TV. The show features a group of expatriate women who share stories about events during their stay in Korea. Last week’s theme was about sexual harassment, and Junko Sagawa spoke of an instructor at the Korean University of Foreign Studies.
“I missed a few classes and then I got a call from the professor,” Sagawa said on the show. She quoted the professor as saying, “I heard that Japanese women sleep with men more easily than Korean women. You don’t have to come to classes if you sleep with me.” Sagawa added that the instructor made similar threats to students from Southeast Asia. A couple of other women on the show backed up Sagawa’s claim by saying that they were also sexually harassed by the same person.
The show is very popular, and thus Sagawa’s disclosure set loose an onslaught of public concern. The university reacted quickly, forming a fact-finding committee the day after the show that was headed by the vice president. Due to the success of the show, some of the featured women, including Sagawa, enjoy celebrity status.
The committee announced that the instructor is not a full professor but a mere instructor at the university’s affiliated program for Korean language and culture. The instructor tendered his resignation, and the university dismissed him for good, the committee said.
