“대통령 선거가 다가오고 있죠? 사진에 정치인들이 있군요. 뒤에는 ‘대통합~신당’이라고 써있고요. 사진 제목이 from nine to five인데 ‘9시부터 5시까지’의 통상적인 근무시간을 뜻하죠. 하지만 여기서는 후보가 9명에서 5명으로 압축된 상황을 나타내는 것이겠죠? 사진과 함께 문장을 하나씩 파악한 후 두 문장을 연속으로 이어서 말할 수 있도록 연습해 보세요.”
한 단계씩 따라하다 보면 문장이 저절로 외워지고 영어 구조에 대한 감각이 자연스럽게 생겨 난답니다.

“첫 문장에서는 주어는 The United New Democratic Party, ‘대통합민주신당’입니다. 동사는 announced, ‘발표했다’이고요. 꾸미는 말 yesterday가 나오고 이어서 목적어 the five contenders가 나옵니다. 상황으로 볼 때 다섯 명의 ‘경쟁자’라는 뜻이겠죠? 우선, 문장의 뼈대인 주어, 서술어, 보어를 연결해서 말해 보세요. The United New Democratic Party …. announced …. the five contenders …. 그 다음에는 수식어까지 넣어서 말해 보세요. who will compete는 ‘경쟁할’. for the liberal party’ nomination은 ‘진보당의 지명’을 놓고. 진보당, liberal party 앞에 the가 있으므로 여기서는 대통합민주신당을 지칭합니다. for president, 대통령 후보를 지명하는 것이고요. 이번엔 수식어까지 넣어서 말해보세요.”

The candidate will be selected …. 이제 수식어까지 붙이면 됩니다. 시점은 on Oct. 15, 10월 15일입니다. after eight rounds, 여덟 차례 후이군요? 무엇을 여덟 차례 한 건가요? regional primary voting, 지역 경선을 여덟 차례 한 거군요. 이제 각 문장을 보지 않고 말할 수 있게 연습한 후, 두 문장을 이어서 말해 보도록 하세요. 내용을 잘 느끼면서 하는 것이 중요합니다. 암기는 목적이 아니라 결과여야 합니다.”
