Chung victor in liberal primary

The long, bitter and confusing race to find a liberal standard-bearer for president ended in victory for former Unification Minister Chung Dong-young yesterday when the United New Democratic Party announced the results of its primary process.

대통합민주신당이 어제 경선 결과를 발표하면서 대선 후보를 찾으려는 진보진영의 길고 격렬하고 혼돈스러운 경주는 정동영 전 통일부 장관의 승리로 끝났다.
Tallying up votes cast in person in five rounds of voting and three rounds of mobile phone balloting, along with the results of an opinion poll factored into the final result, Chung, a one-time TV reporter, gathered 216,984 votes. Sohn Hak-kyu, who had been surging in the latter stages of the race, fell far off the pace with 168,799 votes. Lee Hae-chan trailed with 110,128 votes.

다섯 번의 실제 투표와 세 번의 휴대전화 투표, 한 번의 여론조사를 모두 합산한 결과, 한때 방송기자였던 정 후보가 21만6천984표를 획득했다. 경선 종반에 부상했던 손학규 후보는 16만8천799표를 얻어 정 후보보다 크게 뒤떨어졌다. 이해찬 후보는 11만128표로 뒤쳐졌다.
"We fought fiercely during the past two months, sometimes hurting each other," Chung said following the announcement at the Jangchung Gymnasium in central Seoul. "It is time for mending and consolidation to make the final victory ours." Chung took turns hugging Sohn and Lee when he stepped down from the podium.

서울 장충체육관에서 대선 후보 발표 후 후보수락 연설에서 정 후보는 "우리는 지난 두 달 동안 격렬하게, 때로는 서로에게 상처를 주면서 싸웠습니다. 이제 상처를 보듬고 화합해서 최후의 승리를 우리 것으로 만들어야 할 때입니다."고 말했다. 정 후보는 연단에서 내려와서 손 후보와 이 후보를 차례로 껴안았다.
The sporting anthem "We Are The Champions" blared out from the stadium as Chung waved to supporters who chanted his name. Over 3,000 UNDP fans filled the stands wearing the party's trademark orange T-shirts and waving orange plastic noise-makers.

정 후보가 이름을 연호하는 지지자들에게 답례하자 체육관에서 스포츠 축가인 "We Are The Champions"가 울려 퍼졌다. 통합신당의 상징인 오렌지색 T-셔츠를 입고 오렌지색 플라스틱 딱따기를 흔드는 통합신당 지지자 3천여명이 관람석을 가득 메웠다.
Chung, who was instrumental in the breakup of the Uri Party earlier this year, has a tense relationship with President Roh Moo-hyun, but the two leaders spoke by telephone for 10 minutes at about 7:45 p.m. last night. "I hope that you will embrace those that you have hurt during the primary," Roh told Chung according to Blue House spokesman Cheon Ho-seon, in what seemed a lukewarm note of congratulations at best.

올해 열린 우리당의 해체에 기여하면서 정 후보는 노무현 대통령과 관계가 틀어졌으나, 둘은 어제 밤 7시45분에 10여분 동안 전화통화를 했다. 천호선 청와대 대변인에 따르면 노 대통령은 정 후보에게 "경선에서 상처를 준 사람들을 끌어안고 가기를 바란다." 고 말했는데, 미온적인 축하인사인 듯했다.
After the announcement, some of Sohn's loyalists were in tears as his name was called. Their voices were soon drowned out by cheers for Chung. "I, Chung Dong-young, will hold up the same successful flag that Roh Moo-hyun and Kim Dae-jung did when they were liberal candidates," he said in a victory message.

대선후보를 발표하자 손학규 후보 지자자들이 눈물을 흘렸다. 그러나 그들의 목소리는 곧 정동영 후보를 환호하는 함성에 묻혀버렸다. 정 후보는 후보수락 연설에서 "나 정동영은 노무현 대통령과 김대중 대통령이 진보진영의 후보였을 때 쟁취했던 그 승리의 깃발을 높이 올릴 것입니다."고 말했다.
