[Letter to the editor]Ratify Korea-U.S. FTA

The National Assembly must ratify the free trade agreement between South Korea and the United States.
I read the opinion piece written by Professor Chung In-gyo of Inha University that argued that the National Assembly should quickly put the issue to a vote.
Professor Chung pointed out that the deal was reached under favorable conditions and that it would have a positive influence on ongoing negotiations to establish a free trade agreement with the European Union and raise the status of our country in the international community.
Considering the country’s current situation and the general flow of the world’s economy, I find myself in agreement with the professor.
To say that such an agreement should be made after our country has prepared itself to protect perceived weak areas is not realistic because other nations will not wait for us to do so.
The world is now in the process of establishing a web of free trade agreements. As the United States is the biggest market, nations are striving to forge such accords with the it.
If the deal is not ratified, our competitors will greet the news with joy, while the U.S. government will be disappointed. An extra session of the National Assembly should be held to close this issue.
