Just over a month before the presidential election, leading candidate Lee Myung-bak’s former business partner was extradited to Korea yesterday, arriving in prosecution custody to a frenzy of media attention and speculation that he could derail Lee’s run for the Blue House.

김씨의 신병은 어제 LA국제공항에서 한국 정부 당국자에게 인계됐다. 김씨 호송팀의 한국 검찰은 아시아나 항공 201편 비행기에 탑승해서 김씨에 대한 체포영장을 실행했다. 김씨는 체포된 상태로 대선 선두주자를 연루시킬 지도 모를 민감한 스캔들에 대해 수사를 받을 것이다.
Kim and Lee were partners in an investment firm in 2000, and Kim was accused of fraud and embezzlement involving a different firm only one year later.

김경준씨와 이명박 후보는 2000년 동업으로 투자회사를 만들었고, 1년 뒤 김씨는 다른 회사와 관련된 사기와 횡령혐의로 고소됐다.
Kim, who was arrested in May 2004 in the United States, has said that he only acted on Lee’s orders and that Lee was the actual beneficiary and mastermind of the messy financial scandal involving BBK, an investment firm. Kim had said he would present evidence against Lee once he came back to Seoul.

김씨는 2004년 5월 미국에서 체포됐으며, 당시 김씨는 이명박의 지시에 따라 행동했을 뿐이고 투자회사 BBK와 관련된 지저분한 금융사건의 진짜 수익자와 주모자는 이명박이라고 주장했었다. 김씨는 서울로 돌아오면 자신의 주장을 증명할 자료를 제출할 것이라고 말했었다.
Lee reacted calmly. “What is all the fuss about his return?” he said of his former colleague yesterday morning. “Isn’t it just the extradition of a crook?”

이명박 후보는 차분한 반응을 보였다. “그의 송환에 왜 이 야단들이죠?” 그는 어제 아침에 그의 옛 동업자에 대해 이렇게 말했다. “그냥 사기꾼 한 명이 송환되는 것 아닌가요?”
