Oil from Korea's worst-ever spill coats beach resorts and fish farms

Oil fences and frantic efforts to contain the country's biggest-ever oil spill failed over the weekend as thick, black substance coated beaches and fish farms on the country's west coast, officials said yesterday.

사상 최악의 기름 유출을 봉쇄하려는 오일펜스와 필사적인 노력이 실패하면서 두껍고 검은 기름 덩어리들이 주말에 서해안 일대 해변과 어장을 뒤덮었다고 정부 관계자들이 어제 말했다.
"The thing that we feared the most has happened," said Kang Moo-hyun, head of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, at a media briefing yesterday.
강무현 해양수산부 장관은 어제 기자들에게 상황을 설명하면서 "우리가 가장 두려워했던 일이 터졌다"고 말했다.
The ministry said it would take at least three years for the areas to get back to normal. But some experts said it would take more than 10 years. "We expect the fishermen will be able to resume their work in the region in about three years," said an official at the ministry who refused to be named.

A barge being pulled by a Samsung Heavy Industries tugboat broke loose early Friday, slamming into a single-hulled oil tanker owned by Hebei Ocean Shipping Co. Ltd. in Hong Kong. The incident happened in the Yellow Sea about 15 kilometers, or nine miles, off Korea's west coast near Taean, South Chungcheong.

삼성중공업 예인선이 부선을 끌고 가다 예인 쇠줄이 끊어지면서 부선이 홍콩소재 허베이 해운회사 소유의 단일선체 유조선과 충돌했다. 그 사고는 충남 태안 해안에서 15킬로미터(9마일) 떨어진 서해상에서 발생했다.
The barge punched three holes in the tanker. More than 15,000 tons (109,500 barrels) of crude oil has poured into the water. The leak has reached beach resorts in Taean, as well as seaweed and oyster farms in Geunso Bay and Garorim Bay.
부선은 유조선에 세 개의 구멍을 뚫었다. 1만5천톤 이상의 원유가 바다로 쏟아져 나왔다. 유출된 기름은 근소만과 가로림만의 김•굴 양식장뿐만 아니라 태안의 해변까지 퍼졌다.
According to the ministry, six beaches along the country's west coast ― Manripo, Cheonripo, Baekripo, Sinduri, Gureumpo and Hakampo ― were coated with oil. The ministry said emergency efforts were hindered by winds and high waves. As of yesterday, a 50-kilometer long by 30-meter wide swath of the sea was blackened.

해양수산부에 따르면, 태안군의 서해안 6개 해변 (만리포, 천리포, 백리포, 신두리, 구름포, 학암포)은 기름으로 뒤덮였다. 거센 바람과 높은 파도 때문에 비상 방제작업이 쉽지 않다고 해양수산부는 말했다. 어제까지 길이 50 킬로미터 너비 30미터 가량의 바다가 검은 기름띠로 덮였다.
The leaking hole in the tanker was finally sealed yesterday morning. The ministry said, at first, it expected the oil might reach the beaches early Saturday, about 24 hours after the incident. Instead, the oil reached the beaches starting about 8 p.m. Friday due to strong winds, said an official at the ministry who declined to be named. One-meter-high (three-feet) oil fences could not stop the oil from spreading, the ministry said, because the waves reached as high as four meters.
