먼지 뒤집어 쓰는 집물들의 초라한 모습을 미리 막으려 보자기를 씌우는 습관은 동서양 모두에 있다. 영화에서 흔히 보듯 서양에서는 주로 흰색의 천을 사용해 가구와 다른 집기들을 덮는다.

One of the things that people in both ⓐeast and west have in common is the fact that they ⓑcloth their furniture to ⓒprevent it from turning hoary with dust. Westerners often use ⓓwhite clothes to cover furniture and other ⓔequipments, as you can sometimes ⓕobserve in a movie.

ⓑ cloth their furniture  cover their furniture with cloth ‘cloth’는 옷이나 천을 나타내는 명사로만 쓰임. 원문에 충실하게 동사 cover를 사용하여 수정

ⓓ white clothes  white cloth 천이나 옷감 등은 셀 수 없는 명사이므로 cloth로 수정. 참고로 식탁보나 헝겊 등 특정 종류를 나타내는 경우에는 셀 수 있는 명사로 취급
ⓔ equipments  equipment 집합적인 의미로 시설, 장비 등을 나타낼 때에는 셀 수 없는 명사이므로 equipment로 수정
ⓕ observe in a movie.  see in movies 주의깊게 관찰하는 것이 아니라 그냥 보는 것이므로 see로 수정하고, 한 편의 영화가 아니라 다수의 영화를 얘기하는 것이므로 복수형으로 수정

ⓒ was put  had been placed 이야기가 서술되고 있는 과거시점보다 더 이전에 푸른 보자기가 놓여진 것이므로 과거완료형 사용
ⓓ carved on a corner  carved in a corner 구석이라는 공간에 어울리는 전치사는 in. 참고로 전치사 on은 ‘종이에 쓰다 write on the paper’과 같이 접촉의 의미가 있을 때 사용
ⓔ in the days  during a time 기간을 나타낼 때에는 during 사용
ⓕ was  had been 이야기가 서술되고 있는 과거시점보다 더 이전의 상황을 나타내고 있으므로 과거완료형 사용
