Trout fishing hooks anglers at ice festival
Icy days are here again, and kids prepare to cast their lines into the holes in the frozen river to catch trout. 추운 날씨 속에서 어린이들이 산천어를 잡기 위해 언 강에 구멍을 내고 낚시줄을 드리우고 있다.

우리는 그렇게 큰 기대를 하지는 않았다. 얼어붙은 강 위에 구멍을 내고 물고기가 미끼 물기를 기다리는 낚시꾼 두 서너 명 정도 있지 않을까. 한 두명의 아이들이 낡은 스케이트를 타거나 나무 의자로 만든 썰매를 타고 있지 않을까 생각했다.

Hwacheon in Gangwon. Hwacheon is where the Sancheoneo Ice Festival takes place every year.

On the river banks towered intricate ice sculptures and looming snowmen.
A tractor was pulling a long line of sleds across the ice. Kids were hurling themselves down an ice slide.
An ice castle added a touch of romance to the wintry scene.
강둑에는 거대한 얼음 조각과 눈사람이 세워져 있었다. 언 강위에서는 트랙터가 길게 연결된 썰매들을 끌고 있었고
어린이들은 얼음판 위로 미끌어지며 놀고 있었다. 얼음성은 겨울 풍경에 낭만을 더했다.

포장마차에서는 지글지글 타오르는 닭꼬치의 매콤한 향내와 하얀 김을 내뿜는 어묵 냄새가 풍겨왔다.
나무 의자를 이용해 만든 썰매와 낡은 스케이트를 타는 사람들도 있었다.

The weather was mild for this time of year, even though the river was frozen, prompting thousands of people
to become trout fishermen for the day. According to the Hwacheon Festival Organizing Committee,
more than 180,000 people visited over the two-day weekend festival.
That’s one of the best turnouts since the annual festival got underway in 2003.
강이 얼기는 했지만 올해는 날씨가 포근해 산천어 낚시에 수천의 사람들이 일일 낚시꾼으로 왔다.
화천 축제 조직위원회에 따르면 주말 이틀간 18만명 이상이 이곳을 찾았다. 2003년 행사가 시작된 이래 가장 많은 숫자다.
It had taken three hours of driving from Seoul to reach the river. We’d snaked along winding country roads,
past several sleepy hamlets to get to Hwacheon.
It’s located near Chuncheon, which is famous for its dak galbi (grilled chicken ribs).
서울에서 화천의 강까지는 자동차로 3시간 걸렸다. 우리는 구불구불한 산길을 따라,
조용한 시골 마을 몇개를 지나 화천에 도착했다. 화천은 닭갈비로 유명한 춘천 인근에 있다.
