[New releases]Sara Bareilles.“Little Voice”

“Little Voice” is not how I would describe Sara Bareilles’ set of pipes. I’d favor rich, earthy and well-phrased instead. Unlike most pop starlets, Bareilles isn’t simply a pretty face and pretty voice: Not only does she sing, she also wrote and played piano on all tracks.
Bareilles is at her best on her hit single, “Love Song.” Originally an iTunes Single of the Week, the online music store’s vehicle for highlighting lesser-known artists, the tune is sassier than its title suggests. It’s actually anti-love: “I’m not gonna write you a love song / ‘cause you asked for it / ‘cause you need one you see.”
“Fairytale,” despite its awfully twee twist on the Brothers Grimm’s princesses, also lands a light liberated punch.
But can Bareilles stand out among peers like Michelle Branch, Fiona Apple and Vanessa Carlton? Little Voice is good, but Love Song is the only track that can really hold its own. Maybe a couple of years down the road, listeners will be able to hear a song on the radio and say, “Now that sounds like Sara Bareilles.” By Hannah Bae
