오역
1957년 10월, 소련은 인류 최초의 인공위성 스푸트니크호를 발사하는 데 성공했다. 소련 서기장 흐루쇼프는 기고만장해서 익살을 떨었다. “(스푸트니크가 지구를 벗어났으므로) 이제 지구가 전보다 더 가벼워졌다(Now, the earth became lighter than before).” 외신을 받은 한국의 통신사는 이를 번역해 각 신문사에 송고했다. “별(인공위성)이 떴으므로 이제 지구는 전보다 더 밝아졌다.” 이 경우 ‘light’는 빛이 아니라 ‘가벼움’이란 뜻으로 보아야 한다. 시간에 쫓기는 통신사의 특성이 빚어낸 실수다.내가 한 영작

최근 한국에서는 쇠고기 협상과 관련한 미국의 동물성 사료금지 조치의 오역이 분란을 부르고 있다. 미국 측 연방 관보의 내용은 애초의 입법예고보다 완화된 내용인데 이를 한국 측이 ‘강화 조치’로 오역한 게 문제다. 이 때문에 국내 여론은 폭탄맞은 것처럼 들끓고 있다. 딱한 노릇이다. 정부는 영어 몰입교육을 외치기 전에 협상팀에 영어 전문가를 좀 더 많이 포진시켜야 했다.
